About this course
If a complaint of workplace harassment is made, do you know how to respond, investigate, and report on it — legally and correctly? If you don’t, you are not alone. This 3-day course is a crucial primer for today’s climate. Investigate mock complaints (inspired by our work across the country) from start to finish, build your investigation skills, and learn how to avoid costly pitfalls. The third day focuses on mastering report writing.
Participants will also receive a copy of Human Resources Guide to Workplace Investigations, Second Edition — the definitive text co-authored by Christine Thomlinson. This will be shipped to participants upon completion of the course.
What you'll learn
- Which legal requirements and human resources considerations trigger an investigation

- Who to interview, and in what order
- How to prepare for and conduct investigation interviews
- How to collect and record evidence
- How to approach decision making
- How to avoid common investigation pitfalls
- How to write a thorough and defensible report that will “stick”

- How to avoid common reporting pitfalls
In addition to reviewing the substantive principles associated with conducting a workplace investigation, participants are provided with the opportunity to experience a workplace investigation from initiation through to resolution. Through the use of actors and a prepared fact-pattern, complete with file documents and background materials, we simulate an actual investigation, including conducting interviews with the parties and witnesses and analysis of the evidence. This course allows participants to not only understand the fundamentals of workplace investigations, but to experience an investigation first-hand, with opportunities for participants to play the role of investigator.
